$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Kawano's early death at 49 limits her output. Her dreamlike figure prints are most sought after.
A woman and a yellow canary share the intimate space of the composition, the bird perched near or held by the female figure in a domestic scene of extraordinary tenderness. Kawano's treatment of the woman-and-bird subject draws on a long tradition in Japanese and European art of women depicted with caged or held birds — companions in domesticity, mirrors of the woman's own constrained freedom. The canary's bright yellow would have presented him with a vivid color accent in an otherwise muted palette.
