Description
The third impression listed under this title extends Saito's pattern of working a single motif across multiple plates or states. Variation within an edition was central to his intaglio method — slight changes in wiping, in plate tone, or in the overprinting of color plates shift the emotional register of the image without altering its core composition. The red of the title suggests vermilion or crimson aquatint passages worked over a darker ground, producing the kind of luminous depth that distinguishes postwar Japanese intaglio from the line-dominant European tradition it inherited. As with the rest of the group, the work sits outside the formal Genji cycle yet shares its concern with feminine presence rendered through atmosphere rather than contour. The repetition of the title across multiple prints reflects Saito's habit of returning to a single motif over successive plates, refining tone and surface rather than seeking a definitive single statement.
