Description
A portrait conveying reticence, likely a young woman with averted or downcast gaze, possibly with the face partially obscured by hair, sleeve, or fan. Mezzotint's gradient capacity lets Saito register fine emotional registers—the soft lowering of an eyelid, a slight flush of the cheek, the demure angle of a turned head—through tonal modulation alone. The absence of contour line keeps the image from feeling diagrammatic, instead drawing the viewer into the same close attention the subject is herself withholding. The piece continues Saito's career-long study of feminine emotional states, which together form a quiet typology of inward expression rather than narrative incident, distinguishing his approach from the more anecdotal [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) of the woodblock tradition.
