Description
Refraction (2011) is a nonrepresentational composition dominated by a large horizontal rust-red oval with concentric banding, set against a mottled blue-and-white stippled background. At its center sits a smaller blue oval enclosing a dark navy circle, while below the main form a black, mottled oval with branching silver-white root- or vein-like tendrils appears to drip downward from thin vertical striations. Karen Kunc's mixed-media print combines woodcut, mezzotint, and polymer relief textures, evident in the contrast between the finely stippled dot patterns and the smoother gradated red and blue fields.
