Description

"Rhythm II" (2018) is an abstract, non-figurative composition in coral-red and pale blue-grey, printed to the edges of a rectangular panel within a light grey-green mount. Dense, short curving strokes fan outward from a central vertical axis in overlapping arcs, creating a lens- or eye-like void of lighter, more diffuse marking at the center against denser red striation toward the corners. Kate MacDonagh executed the work in mokuhanga (Japanese water-based woodcut) mounted on a wood panel with archival nori paste, and the overall effect is rippling and optical, evoking a pulsing or breathing motion across the surface.
