This Katsukawa Shunsho print at the Art Institute of Chicago departs from the artist's signature actor portraits to depict a chilling narrative scene: a pilgrim engaged in kannenbutsu, the nighttime devotional practice of contemplating Buddha while reciting the nenbutsu prayer, is startled to discover a disembodied ghostly head lying on the snow-covered ground before him. The image draws on the rich Japanese tradition of supernatural and ghostly tales (kaidan), which flourished in Edo period literature and visual culture and provided ukiyo-e artists with a steady stream of dramatic subjects. The contrast between the devout pilgrim and the uncanny apparition, between religious composure and sudden terror, gives the composition its psychological force. The snow-covered ground, rendered in expressive linework and selective tonal modulation, suggests the cold and isolation of the nocturnal scene, while the figure's posture conveys the moment of recognition and shock. Although Katsukawa Shunsho is best known as the founder of the Katsukawa school of Edo ukiyo-e yakusha-e (actor pictures), his oeuvre also encompassed warrior subjects, classical literature, bijinga, and narrative scenes such as this one, demonstrating the versatility expected of a leading print designer in the Meiwa and An'ei eras. The ghostly head image participates in the broader tradition of yurei (ghost) imagery that would be developed more extensively by later Edo ukiyo-e masters. The Art Institute impression preserves the firm draughtsmanship and considered tonal organization that distinguished Shunsho's production, demonstrating the artist's command of dramatic atmosphere as well as theatrical portraiture.
