Description

Four vertical panels of unequal height, staggered against a plain light-grey ground, form a single composition: a thick coiled rope with two large loops occupies the two central dark-green and black panels, its bound ends fraying outward into two sheaves of fine bristled strands that spill into the flanking maroon and near-black end panels. The palette is restricted to deep maroon, dark green, and black grounds with the rope and fibers rendered in pale grey, tan, and dusty pink linear strokes. Katsunori Hamanishi, "Division Work 51," 1995, mezzotint.
