Description
Couple Japonica depicts two japonica blossoms — likely Chaenomeles japonica (flowering quince) or camellia japonica — paired in a mokuhanga composition. The pairing of subjects has long appeared in the kacho-e lineage, where balanced botanical specimens are arranged to suggest reciprocity rather than narrative. The flowering quince blooms in early spring, its waxy petals and dark woody branches offering high tonal contrast suited to woodblock rendering; alternatively, camellia japonica's deep, layered petals would invite multiple pigment runs for color saturation. Bokashi gradation, applied along the petal edge, can model volumetric depth without resorting to outline. Mokuhanga's water-based pigments and washi support produce the soft luminosity characteristic of the technique. As with Cosmos Field, this Hangaten exhibition piece shows Hamanishi working in woodblock alongside his primary practice in mezzotint, the close botanical attention here continuous with his etched studies of seeds, leaves, and other natural specimens.
