Description

A kimono hangs draped over a wooden rack against a solid black background, its sleeves spread open with a red sash looped over the collar. The upper portion of the garment is deep red with two gilded cloud shapes and a small white disc and crescent moon, while the lower portion is pale grey-blue and bears two large kanji characters and a rendering of a great cresting wave with Mount Fuji beyond it. The palette is limited to black, red, gold, and grey tones, giving the composition a still, formal mood. Katsunori Hamanishi, *Hokusai Kimono*, 2017, mezzotint.
