Description
The third plate in Hamanishi's Round trip series, this intaglio print continues the artist's exploration of cyclical motion and return through carefully observed natural forms. Catalogued as an etching, the work is executed in the mezzotint manner for which Hamanishi is principally known, with a rocked plate worked from absolute black toward graduated highlights. The Round trip designation, recurring across multiple plates, suggests a meditation on journeys completed rather than begun — a third movement in which compositional elements introduced in earlier states reappear in altered orientation or scale. Hamanishi's mezzotint surface produces the velvety, light-absorbing blacks that distinguish the medium, while burnished passages emerge as if illuminated from within. The work belongs to the contemporary Japanese intaglio tradition extended by Yozo Hamaguchi, in which the painstaking labor of plate preparation becomes inseparable from the meditative subject matter of the finished print.
