Cranes by the Shore, illustration for The Leg Shell (Ashigai) from the Katsushika Hokusai series A Matching Game with Genroku-period Poem Shells (Genroku kasen kai awase), is an Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) print of 1816 in the Art Institute of Chicago. The shell-matching game of the title was an old aristocratic pastime that survived into Edo culture as a sophisticated reference for poetry circles, and Hokusai's series pairs each shell with a small scene that could be linked to it through pun, association or visual rhyme. Here the ashigai, literally the leg shell, prompts a study of cranes wading on stilt-like legs at the shore, joining the ornithological observation that Hokusai cultivated alongside his figure work. As an Edo ukiyo-e [surimono](/glossary/surimono), the print belongs to a luxurious end of the market, where small editions allowed for refined color and embossing not seen in mass-market work. The shore composition uses a low horizon and a measured rhythm of upright birds against the open water and sky, exactly the kind of restrained landscape design that would inform his later major series. For collectors interested in the quieter corners of Hokusai's output, the Genroku kasen kai awase series is one of the most rewarding. The Art Institute of Chicago records this sheet within that group.
