A long, shallow-draft ferry crosses the Oi River at Kanaya — one of the most formidable crossings on the Tokaido — with Mount Fuji rising serenely behind in this print from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Kanaya was notorious among travelers: the Oi River had no bridge by shogunal decree, and high water could strand pilgrims and merchants for days. Hokusai renders the ford with dozens of porters and passengers in a scene of determined collective movement.
