Description

The Nezu Gongen shrine in the hilly district north of Ueno is depicted in this print from Hokusai's mid-1780s series of fashionable Edo places. Nezu Gongen (now Nezu Jinja) was one of the city's important Shinto sanctuaries, its red lacquer gates and forested precincts offering a retreat from the surrounding neighborhood's busy streets, and it remains one of Tokyo's least-altered Edo-period shrine compounds.
