Description
Kanagawa, a post town on the shores of Edo Bay and the second stop from the capital on the Tokaido highway, appears in this print from Hokusai's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series (Tokaido gojusan tsugi). Kanagawa's seaside position made it a town of sailors and merchants as much as highway travelers, a character that would have been familiar to any Edoite who had made even a short journey along the bay road.
