Description

Kawasaki, the first major post town south of Edo on the Tokaido highway, appears in this print from Hokusai's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series (Tokaido gojusan tsugi). Kawasaki was known for its ferry crossing of the Tama River and the Daishi temple (Heiken-ji), a popular destination for Edo pilgrims who combined religious duty with the pleasure of a day's outing from the capital.
