Description

Shinagawa, the first post station south of Edo on the Tokaido highway and a seaside town famous for its pleasure houses, appears in this print from Hokusai's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series (Tokaido gojusan tsugi). The station sat directly on the bay, and its promontory views of the ocean and the Boso Peninsula across the water made it as much a scenic destination as a way station.
