Two women in patterned kimono kneel indoors beside a tall rectangular paper andon lamp, its frame left unprinted white against the pale ground. The woman at right, in an orange and green floral-patterned robe with an elaborate hairpin, bends forward over some handwork in her lap; the woman at left, partly obscured behind the lamp, faces down and to the side. Vertical bamboo blinds or slats run along the upper background, and columns of Japanese calligraphy text occupy the left portion and a titled cartouche the upper right, framing the muted palette of orange, green, tan, and grey.
