From 1808, this Katsushika Hokusai print pairs the broad, heart-shaped leaf of the taro potato with the small star-shaped blossoms of the bellflower (kikyo). The combination juxtaposes two very different plant forms, the dense, almost sculptural mass of the taro leaf against the slim, upright stalks and delicate petals of the kikyo. As an Edo ukiyo-e print, the work continues Hokusai's exploration of the kacho-ga tradition through unconventional pairings of plants that share a season but not a visual register. The taro potato (sato-imo) was a staple of Japanese cuisine, and its broad leaves were a familiar sight in vegetable gardens throughout the country. The bellflower, by contrast, was a celebrated subject of classical poetry, one of the so-called seven autumn flowers, with associations of refinement and seasonal melancholy. By placing the two together, Hokusai bridges the everyday world of the kitchen garden and the literary world of the waka anthology in a single sheet. The composition leans on the contrast of scale and texture; the deep green of the taro leaf provides a foil for the cool purple-blue of the bellflower blossoms, while the gentle curl of the leaf's edge gives the print its movement. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds the work within its Hokusai collection. The sheet shows the artist's interest in plants of both decorative and practical value, and it confirms his determination to treat the natural world as both observed reality and cultural reference. The print stands as one of his most appealing botanical studies, modest in scale but quietly ambitious in its synthesis of cuisine, poetry, and design.
