Hokusai's own Tokaido series (Tokaido gojusan tsugi) is often overshadowed by Hiroshige's Hoeido edition, but offers a distinctively angular, powerful interpretation of the road by Japan's greatest master.
Description
Totsuka, the fifth post station on the Tokaido highway and the last before the traveler descended to Kamakura's coastal approaches, appears in this print from Hokusai's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series (Tokaido gojusan tsugi). The station was a compact, prosperous town whose position just before the scenic coastal stretch made it a popular resting point.
