Description
Mount Atago (Atagoyama), rising to 924 meters northwest of Kyoto, is sacred to the fire deity Atago Gongen and the site of Atago Shrine, one of the most important fire-prevention shrines in Japan. The pilgrim path ascending the mountain passes through cedar forest, traditional torii gates, and stone-stepped approaches that have been trodden for centuries. Nishijima's print depicting the way to Atago likely focuses on the character of this approach path — the scale-establishing height of cryptomeria trees flanking the stone steps, the mossy lanterns and weathered torii that punctuate the ascent, the filtered light of a forest interior. Compositionally, a steeply receding diagonal path structure would draw the eye upward and inward, with the forest canopy closing overhead to create a sense of enclosed, sacred passage. The palette would be dominated by deep forest greens, the grays of stone and aged wood, and the red-orange of Shinto torii elements, all rendered with the architectural precision characteristic of Nishijima's practice.
