Description
"Hizashi" — sunlight, specifically the direct light of the sun rather than ambient illumination — depicts a traditional Japanese townscape under the particular conditions of strong, clear sunlight that produces sharp shadows and vivid color contrast. Nishijima's treatment of direct sunlight reveals his sensitivity to the full range of illumination conditions: where his grey-day and rainy-day scenes dissolve contrast into atmospheric unity, his sunlight scenes use the sharp geometry of shadow to reveal the architectural structure of his subjects with maximum clarity.
