KATASHIGURE (It rains off and on)
Description
"Katashigure" — intermittent winter rain, falling and then stopping, then falling again in the characteristic pattern of November and December showers — captures the irregular, indecisive quality of a specific meteorological condition. Nishijima renders a traditional townscape under these changing conditions: the surfaces alternately wet and dry, the sky uncertain, the quality of light shifting between the grey of active rain and the fractional brightening of its intervals. His sensitivity to the specific texture of particular weather conditions elevates these prints above generic seasonal notation.
