Description
Mie-dera — a temple along the Kisokaido route — is depicted in Nishijima's characteristic fusion of architectural documentation and atmospheric sensitivity. The temple's approach, gate, or precinct buildings are rendered with the careful observation of traditional religious architecture that Nishijima brought to all his temple subjects: the proportions of the gate, the quality of the surrounding garden, the sense of a sacred space defined as much by its human and natural elements as by any individual building.
