"Matsunouchi" refers to the period of "within the pine" — the first days of the new year through the fifteenth of January, when kadomatsu pine decorations stand at the entrances of Japanese homes and businesses as symbols of the new year's welcome. Nishijima renders a traditional street or architecture decorated for this festive period: the pine and bamboo decorations at doorways, the particular quality of new-year light, the sense of a community engaged in collective ritual renewal that the Japanese new year uniquely provides.
