Description
This print depicts the dawn light at Murozu, a historic fishing village on the Bizen coast of Okayama Prefecture, where the morning sky reflecting off the sea creates the warm red-orange glow of asayake. Nishijima renders the traditional townscape of Murozu — its white-walled, black-tiled namamako-kabe storehouses and fishing boats along a narrow waterfront — against the dramatically colored sky of sunrise. The composition employs strong horizontal banding: the luminous sky above, the still water of the Seto Inland Sea reflecting the color, and the dark architectural silhouettes of the shoreline buildings in the lower register. Gradation printing in the sky, achieving the smooth transition from deep red to pale gold, demonstrates the technical demands of this subject within the woodblock medium.
