Description
Niwatazumi is a classical Japanese word for the puddles that form in a garden or courtyard after rain — the term appears in the Man'yoshu and carries poetic associations with quiet, post-rain stillness and the reflective quality of standing water. Nishijima's print likely depicts a garden or paved courtyard in the immediate aftermath of rainfall, with shallow puddles on stone pavement or garden paths mirroring the surrounding architecture or plantings. The compositional interest lies in the doubling effect of reflection: the familiar elements of a traditional garden or townscape repeated, inverted, and slightly distorted in the flat surfaces of rain water. The palette would emphasize the wet, saturated colors of stone and moss against an overcast post-rain sky, with bokashi gradations conveying the soft diffuse light of the moment.
