$1,000–$6,000. Common subjects: $1,000–$2,000. Key value factors: Nishijima's nostalgic Japanese village scenes appeal to collectors worldwide. Limited editions maintain value well.
"Saga-no-machiya" depicts a traditional townhouse (machiya) in Saga, the district on Kyoto's northwestern edge near Arashiyama, whose traditional built environment combined the urban machiya format with the more rural architectural traditions of the surrounding hills and bamboo groves. Nishijima renders this "old house in Saga" — as the subtitle specifies — with his characteristic attention to the age and history embodied in the structure: the patina of old timber, the slight irregularities of long inhabitation, the quality of a building that has shaped itself to its users as much as they have shaped it.
