Description
Seijaku — meaning stillness or silence — is a concept central to Japanese aesthetics, and this print almost certainly depicts an architectural or landscape scene in which the absence of human activity becomes the subject. Nishijima's characteristic precision would render a narrow lane, a temple gate, or the interior of a machiya townhouse caught in a moment of complete quiet. The palette would likely be restrained: grey roof tiles, weathered timber, perhaps a single patch of snow or fallen leaves to mark the season. The title functions as both description and instruction to the viewer, directing attention to what is not present rather than what is.
