Description
Shoji — the translucent paper-and-wood sliding screens central to traditional Japanese interior architecture — are here the primary subject, a study in light transmission and geometric form. Nishijima likely renders the screens from inside or outside a traditional room, showing the way diffused light from a garden or street passes through the washi paper to cast a warm, even glow. The shadow of a branch, the outline of a bamboo blind, or the silhouette of a stone lantern might be just visible through the paper. The subject is inherently abstract in its formal qualities — a grid of wood and light — while remaining deeply rooted in the material culture of vernacular Japanese architecture. Precise block-cutting would be essential to render the thin wooden kumiko latticework with accuracy.
