Description

Mount Taishi (Taishiyama) in Osaka Prefecture is associated with Prince Shotoku (Taishi), and the area around the Eifuku-ji temple complex retains traditional commercial streetscapes of the type Nishijima documents across central Japan. This print likely shows a shop facade — a miscellany dealer, craft store, or religious goods seller — in a wooden machiya or similar vernacular commercial building. Nishijima's architectural eye would capture the details that distinguish regional commercial architecture: the particular proportions of the shopfront, the overhanging eaves, the merchandise displayed in the entryway, and the patina of age on the materials. Such prints serve both as art and as documentation of building types that are disappearing from the Japanese landscape.
