Description
Kumagawa-juku in Wakasa, Fukui Prefecture, is a post-town (shukuba-machi) along the former Wakasa Kaido trade route, its historic streetscape of whitewashed earthen-wall storehouses and wooden townhouses among the best-preserved in the Hokuriku region. Nishijima's print of this subject would document the compressed perspective of a narrow main street, with continuous building facades creating a strong linear rhythm. The regional architectural character — thicker walls and heavier roof construction adapted to Fukui's heavy snowfall — would be apparent in the building profiles. This is meticulous meisho-e work in the tradition of recording specific places at a specific historical moment, and the relative obscurity of the location compared to Kyoto or Takayama reflects Nishijima's commitment to the less-celebrated historic environments of provincial Japan.
