Description
The Sumiya — one of Kyoto's oldest and most architecturally significant okiya establishments, now preserved as a cultural property — is rendered in Nishijima's characteristic mode of historical architectural appreciation. The Sumiya's extraordinary interior spaces and its preserved Edo-period exterior make it one of the most significant surviving examples of the specialized architecture that served Kyoto's entertainment culture. Nishijima's rendering honors both the building's historical importance and its specific aesthetic character: the Sumiya was always as much cultural institution as commercial establishment.
