The Way to Mt. Atago, Kyoto

Mount Atago, northwest of central Kyoto in the Kitayama range, is accessed by a long trail ascending through cedar forest past small shrine complexes and ancient stone markers. The approach to the mountain has been depicted by Kyoto artists for centuries, valued for the way the steep forested path creates a strong perspectival recession framed by towering cryptomeria.
