Description
Mount Atago, northwest of central Kyoto in the Kitayama range, is accessed by a long trail ascending through cedar forest past small shrine complexes and ancient stone markers. The approach to the mountain has been depicted by Kyoto artists for centuries, valued for the way the steep forested path creates a strong perspectival recession framed by towering cryptomeria. Nishijima would likely render the cedar trunks as vertical emphases punctuating the receding path, their dark bark contrasting with patches of sky or filtered light. The Atago pilgrimage route retains its traditional character — stone lanterns, torii gates, mossy steps — providing exactly the kind of historically layered landscape that grounds his architectural and environmental documentation.
