Description
An unknown house scene — a second study of a domestic architectural subject — demonstrates Nishijima's practice of returning to significant subjects through multiple approaches. The traditional house as architectural subject offered him inexhaustible material: the relationship between interior and exterior, the way different light conditions reveal different qualities in the timber and tile, the specific character of a building shaped by its inhabitants' needs and preferences over generations of occupancy. Each house study, even of the same subject, reveals something the previous one missed.
