Description
A winter scene is suggested by the tonality typical of Nishijima's cold-season prints, where snow reduces the landscape to simplified planes of white and grey, with only the dark verticals of wooden posts and the warm ochre of clay walls retaining strong color. This print likely depicts a snow-covered courtyard, garden path, or rural road, with traditional structures framing the composition on one or both sides. The sky would be rendered through graduated [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) in grey-blue to white, suggesting the flat light of overcast winter rather than direct sun. Snow accumulation on rooftops is a characteristic motif in Nishijima's work, its weight conveyed through the slight downward bow of eaves rather than through explicit illustration. The technical challenge of printing white-on-white — using the reserved paper ground to represent snow — is met through precise block cutting that leaves subtle texture in the negative space.
