Description
This print belongs to a Tokyo meisho-e series titled "Tokyo Kaika Meisho" (Tokyo Civilization Famous Places) and combines two subjects in its inscription: Nihonbashi at dawn and the ninth-generation Ichikawa Danjuro. Nihonbashi, the commercial and ceremonial center of Edo-period Tokyo, had by the 1870s taken on associations with both tradition and transformation, as Meiji-era construction altered the cityscape around the bridge. Ichikawa Danjuro IX (1838–1903) was the dominant Kabuki actor of the Meiji era, famous for his revival of the aragoto (rough business) style and his performance of the juhachiban collection of signature plays. The combination of a famous urban landmark with a celebrity theatrical figure reflects a standard strategy of meisho-e publishing, in which famous places served as settings for popular figures to extend commercial appeal. The dawn setting would allow for atmospheric bokashi gradations suggesting early morning light over the Nihonbashi riverscape.
