Description
A second print from Kyōsai's Tokyo Kaikwa Meishō no Uchi series bearing the same title as the previously issued sheet depicting Chiba-no-suke Tanenao, Ishibama Shinmei, and the Hashiba Ferry. The duplication of titles within a print series was not unusual in nineteenth-century popular publishing, and this sheet may represent a variant design, a reissue with different coloring, or a companion piece treating the same subjects from a different compositional angle. The Hashiba Ferry and Ishibama Shinmei subjects were associated with the northeastern margins of the traditional Edo city, areas of both religious significance and working-class character. The loyalty narrative tied to these sites gave the print series a moralizing dimension that complemented the topographical and journalistic aims of the kaikwa meisho genre.
