Description
From the 'Tōkyō Kaika Meishō no Uchi' series, this print presents two contrasting vignettes that together embody the kaika (civilization and enlightenment) theme central to the series. The first scene depicts a rowdy sake-barrel drinking competition at Kawasaki station (河崎駅ニ樽次底深酒戦ノ図), showing revelers in competitive consumption — a humorous subject that Kyosai, renowned for his own prodigious drinking, would have rendered with characteristic verve and exaggerated physiognomy. The second vignette shows passengers aboard the Rokugō railway at Kawasaki (川崎六ごう鉄道ノ内のり合ノづ), one of Japan's earliest steam lines, which opened in 1872 connecting Shinbashi to Yokohama via Kawasaki. The juxtaposition of a timeless Japanese drinking ritual with a Western-imported locomotive and its mixed-dress passengers captures the comic tension of Meiji modernization. This kind of kaika-e subject — traditional behavior alongside imported technology — was a staple of the 1870s popular print market.
