Description
Okadaya-uchi Tamagi is a bijin-ga depicting the courtesan Tamagi of the Okadaya house. Like its companions in the series, this print follows the established Edo visual grammar for licensed-quarter portraiture: the subject identified by house affiliation before personal name, the figure displayed in elaborate formal dress with sumptuous textile patterns rendered through careful key-block carving and selective bokashi gradation. Kyosai's training in Kano academic figure painting would be visible in the structural solidity of the pose, distinguishing his bijin from the more elongated proportions favored by Utagawa-school contemporaries.
