Description
Another sheet from Genroku Nihon Nishiki, this print presents Muramatsu Sandayu Takanao and Yanagihara Heizaemon, two lesser-celebrated members of the Ako band. The iroha syllable 'mi' identifies one figure. Such multi-figure compositions within the series allowed Kyosai to portray the full complement of retainers, each distinguished by facial type, armor detail, or weapon. The Chushingura narrative remained a perennially popular subject in Meiji-era print culture, and Kyosai's treatment would have appealed to audiences nostalgic for samurai-era moral codes even as the Meiji government was actively dismantling the warrior class.
