Description
A multi-subject print from Kyōsai's Tokyo Kaikwa Meishō no Uchi (Among the Famous Civilized Places of Tokyo) series, combining three distinct subjects: the area of Shin-Nippori, the district of Samegabashi, and a representation related to the second Tokugawa shogun Hidetada. This grouping — two topographical views alongside an historical reference — was not uncommon in popular print series that sought to blend contemporary [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) with didactic historical content. Shin-Nippori was a hillside area north of the city associated with scenic overlooks; Samegabashi was a low-lying district near the outer moat. The inclusion of Tokugawa Hidetada suggests either a historical vignette or a reference to sites associated with his legacy, giving the print a layered temporal quality typical of Kyōsai's engagement with Tokyo's deep historical fabric.
