Description
From the 'Tōkyō Kaika Meishō no Uchi' series, this densely composed print combines five vignettes drawn from the eastern and northern outskirts of Tokyo. The subjects include Tateishi (立石), a standing stone landmark in the Katsushika area; the Buddhist sculptor Kasuga (仏工春日) at work carving a statue of Binzuru Sonja (賓頭盧尊者), one of the sixteen arhats typically placed at temple entrances where devotees rub the figure for healing; the Nakagawa river checkpoint (中川河番所), a Tokugawa-era inspection station controlling traffic along an important waterway; and the scattered pines of the Tonegawa riverbank (利根川ばら/\松). The depiction of active image-carving is unusual in meishō-e, emphasizing the devotional labor behind religious sculpture. Kyosai juxtaposes craft, bureaucratic geography, and natural topography — grounding religious production and river governance within a shared landscape. The multi-panel ōban format accommodates the compositional breadth typical of this series.
