Description
From Kyōsai's Tokyo Kaikwa Meishō no Uchi series, this print combines two subjects: a narrative scene relating to the historical figure Chiba-no-suke Tanenao and the Ishibama Shinmei shrine, paired with a depiction of the Hashiba Ferry crossing and a subject identified with the theme of loyalty (chū). The print exemplifies the Meiji-era popular print convention of pairing landscape or meisho subjects with historical vignettes that carry moral weight — here, themes of loyalty and devotion associated with historical warriors and local sacred sites. The Hashiba Ferry was a well-known crossing on the Sumida River north of Asakusa, a site long associated with traditional Edo district life. Kyōsai's composition would balance narrative illustration with topographic rendering, characteristic of this hybrid genre.
