Description
The right panel (migi) of the [diptych](/glossary/diptych) Kuruwa Shinbun Urami no Nenba depicts a scene of violent resentment from the pleasure quarter, the title translating roughly as 'Pleasure Quarter News: The Blade of Resentment.' Such 'kuruwa shinbun' (quarter news) prints addressed sensational incidents from the licensed districts — crimes of passion, disputes, murders — that circulated as tabloid-like subjects in popular print culture. The 'nenba' (sharpened or tempered blade held in readiness) implies premeditated violence. Kyosai, whose work frequently engaged with subjects of death and transgression, would have rendered the scene with the dramatic intensity and psychological acuity that distinguishes his narrative prints from more conventional treatments.
