Description
The left panel (hidari) of the Kuruwa Shinbun Urami no Nenba diptych completes the scene begun in the right sheet. Diptych composition in woodblock printing allowed Kyosai to construct a unified pictorial field across two oban sheets, with the image resolving fully only when the panels are read together. In kuruwa incident subjects, the left panel typically reveals the consequence or continuation of the action initiated on the right — the moment of violence, its aftermath, or the psychological state of the perpetrator or victim. Kyosai's mature draftsmanship, with its capacity for expressive distortion of faces and bodies under extreme emotion, would have been well suited to such charged narrative material.
