Description
The second print in Kyōsai's Rakuga series of humorous woodblock prints. Across this series, Kyōsai moved freely between subjects — supernatural beings, comic animals in human roles, historical figures rendered absurdly, and observations on Meiji social change — united by a loose, improvisational quality that distinguishes his commercial print work from the more formal productions of mainstream ukiyo-e publishers. The Rakuga sheets were issued in numbered installments, and their consistent format and branding reflect the commercialized popular publishing environment of early Meiji Tokyo. Kyōsai's ability to suggest motion and expression with minimal line made such prints immediately legible to a broad audience accustomed to the vigorous visual language of Edo-period popular culture.
