Description
The center sheet of a comic triptych whose title, Doke Hyakumanben, combines the word for buffoon or clown (doke) with a term meaning repetition of a prayer or act one hundred thousand times. The center panel likely serves as the compositional hub, presenting the principal comic figure or group — possibly a troupe of street entertainers, kabuki clowns, or mythological buffoons — in exaggerated poses that showcase Kyosai's mastery of caricature. His doke imagery typically draws on rakugo traditions, kyogen theater, and popular urban comedy, distilling character into bold gestural line. The triptych format allows the comic scenario to unfold across three sheets in a sequence that rewards left-to-right reading. Kyosai's satirical woodblock work often carried oblique social commentary within its broadly comic surface.
