Description
The left sheet concluding the Doke Hyakumanben triptych. As the final panel, it resolves or amplifies the comic action introduced in the right and center sheets, possibly depicting the culminating moment of a comic scenario — a pratfall, a confrontation, or an absurdist tableau. Kyosai's doke figures frequently edge toward the grotesque without crossing into the genuinely threatening, occupying the zone of carnival license that characterized popular entertainment in the late Edo and early Meiji periods. The triptych as a whole reflects Kyosai's lifelong engagement with satirical and comic imagery, a thread running from his early training under Kuniyoshi through his mature independent work. His ability to inflect comic subject matter with sharp draftsmanship distinguishes his doke prints from more routine popular production of the era.
