Description
This unidentified Kawanabe Kyosai woodblock print is known by its institutional sequence number rather than a confirmed title. Kyosai's printmaking encompasses a substantial range of formats and subjects — from large [oban](/glossary/oban) sheets suitable for display to smaller album-format compositions intended for close study. His [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) bird-and-flower prints demonstrate the same anatomical precision he brought to figure subjects, reflecting training in both naturalistic observation and classical Chinese bird painting conventions transmitted through the Kanô school. His supernatural and mythological prints draw on a thorough knowledge of Buddhist visual culture, Chinese literary subjects, and Japanese legend. This print participates in the [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) tradition of Edo and Meiji commercial woodblock production.
