Description
A companion sheet to the 「七福春の暁筆」 series, this print continues Kyosai's treatment of the Seven Lucky Gods within a New Year-themed suite. The Shichifukujin were a popular subject for New Year's prints (nengajo and fukubukuro imagery) throughout the Edo and Meiji periods, and multi-sheet sets allowed artists to dedicate individual compositions to each deity while maintaining a unified graphic identity across the group. Kyosai's characteristic handling — loose, almost calligraphic contour lines, economical colour blocking, and figures with a rounded, almost caricatured physical presence — would distinguish this sheet from more conventionally refined treatments of the same subject by Utagawa-school competitors. The 'spring dawn brush' designation in the series title frames the prints as auspicious first-of-year works imbued with the vitality of a fresh start.
